I don’t think that there is a single person who has not experienced disappointment at some point in their lives. Disappointment is a part of life. You will, in your lifetime, disappoint someone and others will disappoint you. Although we may be familiar with disappointment, accepting it is the hard part. This is because disappointment is one of life’s most uncomfortable feelings. With it comes a subset of other emotions like anger, hurt, sadness, and probably many others too subtle to identify. When you feel disappointment, this can linger in your mind, bringing a grey perspective on life, even if you are trying to forget about it.
It is easy for me to advise you to “just get over it” While we want to do that, it is not so simple. Psychology suggests that you must give yourself permission to feel what you are feeling and not to rush this process neither should you try to fix it. Let that process or that feeling take its course.
As a follower of Christ, I want to encourage you know what your core values are. Do these core values form part of your framework? As Christians some of the core values that should form part of this framework are love, kindness, self-esteem, forgiveness and hope. All of these are graces that God gives us. His work in us causes us to act with love and kindness towards others because we know who we are in Christ.
Knowing who you are in Christ and knowing your core values give you the freedom of choice. You can choose to be driven by what happens to you, or you can choose to live in line with your core values.
Psalms 42:11 – Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
