It’s Election Season

It's Election TimeWhenever there’s an election in any democracy in any part of the globe, candidates pull out all the stops to win the hearts and votes of the electorate. The rhetoric from candidates from both sides of the political aisle often challenges the values of people of faith. People of faith, and in particular followers of Christ, are sometimes torn between their values and the pressing need/s of their times. Some of the pressing needs can be security, economics, protection of free speech, the right to protest and so on. You will agree that whether one is on the left, middle or right on the political spectrum, there are issues and values that can sometime rub you the wrong way. How will faith and it’s values shape one’s understanding of these sometime complex issues, so that an informed decision is arrived at? If one has to put these values and pressing issues on a weighing scale, which weighs heavier?

I came across this very significant quote which I believe should encourage us as we reflect on living intentionally for Christ during election season and beyond. “We can not allow our present to determine our future, but rather we must allow our future to determine our present” In other words, eschatology (end times) should inform how we understand and express ourselves in relation to our fellow citizens who are all created in the image of God. We should also take into consideration God’s plan for the end of time.

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” Philippians 3:20-21
